The time it takes to check your home before winter arrives will pay off in preventing pest problems. Here are five things you can do!

Remove Sources of Moisture. Fix leaky pipes, remove standing water in drains and clean up spills under appliances to remove excess moisture. This makes your home less attractive to pests.

Seal off Access. Look for multiple entry points where pests can enter. Caulk cracks and crevices around windows; stuff steel wool around pipes where they enter the home; repair door jambs; and seal cracks in foundations and other areas of the exterior of your home.

Remove Food Sources. Immediately clean up all spills and remove food debris and dirty dishes from other areas of the home. Once a week, remove everything from kitchen counters and clean with an antibacterial product to remove hidden crumbs and spills. Clean behind and under refrigerators, stoves and dishwashers.

Discard Nesting Materials. Discard empty cardboard boxes and paper as this is an ideal nesting material for rodents.

Move Firewood Away from your Home. Do not stack firewood within 20 feet of your home before winter to prevent critters from becoming a problem because firewood can harbor many kinds of insects (including termites).

So take extra time to do a deep cleaning of your home before winter to prevent all matter of critters from becoming unwanted house guests!
