Pests: How do they enter my home?

Do you think your walls are solid enough to keep pests out? Think again. Nearly every wall has some kind of tiny opening through which pests can slither.

The best preventive is to go on a crack and crevice hunt around your home and seal any openings you find with caulk. Seal cracks around windows and sliding doors. Check door thresholds and repair if there are cracks beneath them.

Dormers, roof vents, and adjoining rooflines become entrance points into your attic for squirrels and bats.

Rodents hide in tiny holes in the gaps around utility lines and along foundations, which provide them a Be sure dryer vents are vented properly to the outside. If they are not, this is a perfect entry point for pests.

Close your garage door and look from the inside to see if light is getting in under or around the door. If light gets in, so can pests! Repair or replace the weather stripping.

But these are not the only ways pests can enter. You may unknowingly bring pests like cockroaches into your home in cardboard boxes and bags, so dispose of those immediately after emptying them. Don’t store boxes or bags in basements or garages.
